In a chilly evening match against Landstown High School, the Grassfield Grizzlies varsity girls’ soccer team showcased their defensive prowess in a hard-fought battle. Despite the tough defensive play from both sides, it was the Grizzlies who managed to secure a well-deserved victory.
Led by Sara Koch’s outstanding performance, which marked her second shutout game of the season, the Grizzlies’ defense stood strong against their opponents. The lone goal of the match came from Katie Dowd (1), whose decisive strike proved to be the difference-maker.
With their solid defensive effort and Dowd’s crucial goal, the Grizzlies emerged triumphant with a narrow 1-0 win.

Varsity girls on a cold March evening started the 2024 pre-season with a 2-0 scrimmage win against Cox High School.

In a highly anticipated matchup, the Grizzlies brought their regular season to a thrilling conclusion against the formidable Hickory Hawks. The intense battle on the field led to a nail-biting double overtime that ultimately resulted in a hard-fought 0-0 tie. Ava Puskas had her 10th shutout of the season with 1 save as the Grizzlies out shot the Hawks 10-1 hitting the bar several times.
The team finished the regular season as back to back district champions with a 12-2-2 overall record and an undefeated district season record of 8-0-1. Additionally, they scored an amazing 78 goals while only conceding 14.
With their heads held high, the Grizzlies can now turn their attention to the postseason with renewed determination.

The Grizzlies defeated Kings Fork and Great Bridge last week, 13-0 and 2-0 respectively. In the match vs Kings Fork, Katie Dowd(13) had a 15-minute hat trick, while Ava Roberts (2) and Ellie Kreutzberg (5) each had a brace. Other goals were scored by Ciera Frick (4) game winner, Bella Franco (4), Amina Bracey (1), Hanna Smith (4), Addy Otte (2), and Jillian Kemp (9). On Thursday against a tough Great Bridge side, Hanna Smith (5) scored the game winner in the 36th minute off an assist by Jillian Kemp (2). Ava Roberts (8) secured the win in the 78th with a goal from outside the right corner of the box (also assisted by Jillian Kemp). Ava Puskas got the 7th shutout of the season with 3 saves and numerous quality defensive plays outside the box.

The Grizzlies won their 4th consecutive district match (6th consecutive overall) by a score of 4 – 1 over the Warriors of Nansemond River on two goals scored by Bella Franco (3), and one goal by Ellie Kreutzberg (3) and Ciera Frick (3). Goals were assisted by Bella Franco (6), Ciera Frick (2), Ellie Kreutzberg (2) and Mia Erdner (1). Ava Puskas had 3 saves in the victory. The team is currently seeded 2nd in the Region behind only Kellam.

The Grizzly girls continue to dominate their opponents, as they secured their fifth consecutive win, all while keeping their opponents scoreless in each game. The impressive shutout streak can be attributed to the outstanding goal keeping performances of Ava Puskas and Sara Koch, who have been instrumental in the team’s success.
In their latest victory, the Grizzly girls scored an impressive 14 goals, with hat tricks from Katie Dowd (10) and Jillian Kemp (8) . Ally Quiroz (3) also contributed two goals to the tally, while Ava Roberts (5), Ciera Frick (3), Hanna Smith (3), and Maddie Laughinghouse (1) each scored one goal. The team’s success is a testament to their excellent teamwork and the contributions of multiple players on the field.
Assists from Ava Roberts (1), Bella Franco (5), Katie Anderson (1), Addy Otte (1), and Ally Quiroz (3) helped set up the scoring opportunities and showcase the team’s well-roundedness. With this impressive victory, the Grizzlies have undoubtedly sent a message to their next opponents, the Nansemond River Warriors, who will have their work cut out for them in trying to stop the Grizzlies’ winning streak.

The Grizzlies put on an impressive performance tonight, as they handed Deep Creek Hornets their first loss of the season with a final score of 8-0.
Cierra Frick (2), Katie Dowd (7), and Jillian Kemp (5), each scoring two goals to contribute to the team’s impressive tally. In addition, Ally Quiroz (1) and Ava Roberts (4) each scored one goal, demonstrating the team’s depth and versatility on offense.
The goals were well-supported by a strong team effort, with several players providing assists to create scoring opportunities. Ally Quiroz (2) and Hanna Smith (2) each had two assists, while Bella Franco (3) and Amina Bracey (1) had one assist each, showcasing the team’s cohesive and selfless approach to play.
The Grizzlies also demonstrated a strong defense, with Ava Puskas and Sara Koch combining for four saves to secure the team’s fourth shutout of the season.

Western Branch started strong with several attempts early on. Grassfield settled down and had control for the last 20 minutes of the first half. At halftime the score was 0-0. WB started the second half quickly but the Grizzlies defended well and the tide turned in the 59th minute when the ball was played into the left corner. Ellie Kreutzberg played a low cross in front of goal and Jillian Kemp finished for the Grizzlies. Brielle Stahl and Katie Anderson had several quality defensive plays. Katie Dowd led the team in chances created. The team is now 5-2-1 on the season.

The Grizzly girls shutout Currituck County on Thursday 2-0. The game went into overtime with Katie Dowd (5) and Hanna Smith (2) scoring in the second overtime period. Grassfield outshot Currituck 28 (16 SOG) to 5 (1 SOG). Ava Puskas recorded her second shutout of the season. Next game is at Western Branch. The team is now 4-2-1 on the season after having played a tough preseason schedule (top 4 teams according to 757soccer).

Grassfield bounced back from a tough loss to FC to beat Smithfield 4-1. Smithfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead after 5 minutes on a goal by Katie Lutz. After that the Grizzlies settled in and created several chances before Addy Otte (1) tied the score with a goal from distance assisted by Katie Dowd. After half time the Grizzlies got going with 2 goals by Katie Dowd (4) and a late goal by Hanna Smith (1) to seal the victory. Ava Puskas had 5 saves in goal.

The Grizzlies lost to First Colonial 8-2 tonight. The girls played a strong first half, holding off the Patriots for the first 20 minutes before breaking. At halftime, the score 3-2, after first half goals by Ellie Kreutzberg (2) and Katie Dawd (2). FC came out of the half and grabbed a 4th goal and continued to put pressure on the Grizzlies. Next up is Smithfield.

Grassfield fell to Kellam last night 0-1 on a 5th minute corner. Ava Puska had 7 saves in the loss.

Grassfield opened the scoring in the 27th minute on a through ball by Madie Pedraza to Ava Roberts (3) who tucked the ball into the far corner (see the goal). Ocean came back in the 55th minute on a shot from the right side that dipped under the crossbar and post. In the 65th minute Ellie Kreutzberg (1) took a pass from Ciera Frick down the left side of the penalty area and looped a ball over the keeper into the far side netting to close the score for the night. Brielle Stahl and Katie Anderson has solid performances in the back line.

The Grizzlies held the advantage in possession and shots on the evening, registering 13 SOG to 2 for Landstown. Landstown’s keeper made several good saves during the match but was unable to keep out Ava Roberts (2) header to the bottom left corner in the 49th minute. Grassfield continued to attack as Landstown tried to grab an equalizer, but in the end the Grizzlies came out on top. Ava Puskas had 2 saves in the shutout victory. Ciera Frick, Addy Otte and Katie Dowd had excellent performances in the middle of the field while the back line held strong against Landstown’s attack. Bella Franco, Ally Quiroz and Jillian Kemp had strong efforts on the front line, creating several chances throughout the game. In the back, Amina Bracey had a strong performance from left back, assisting the goal off of a free kick by Adde Otte.

Grassfield 1-1 Cox. Grassfield opened up the scoring in the 35th minute on a well worked team goal. Hannah Smith played a ball forward to Jillian Kemp who played a ball wide right to Vierra Frick who then sent a long diagonal through ball to Bella Franco. Bella shot far post, with the Cox goalie making a foot save, only to put the ball on the middle for Jillian Kemp (2) to tuck it home.
Grassfield held the lead until the 77th minute when Cox put home a ball just inside the box. After a scoreless overtime period, the game ended in a draw.
Grizzly goalie Eva Puska had 6 saves in the goal.

The girls won their scrimmage v Cox by a score of 2-1. After going down 0-1 in the 28th minute, the Grizzlies came back to score two goals from Madie Pedraza (1) and Katie Dowd (1) with assist from Ally Quiroz.

Grassfield started strong, scoring inside of 4 minutes on a shot from Ava Roberts (1). The Grizzlies controlled the first 10 – 15 minutes of play before the game evened out, until the 32nd minute when Bella Franco (1) scored the second from inside the box. Currituck scored shortly after to make it 2-1. After the half, Grassfield struck back in the 53rd minute (Jillian Kemp – 1), 71 (Jillian Heare – 1) and 77 (Own Goal), before Currituck finished the scoring with a late goal off a corner. Final score Grassfield 5 – Currituck 1.
